The Brief
Primal Spirits Distillery is a South African craft gin brand rooted in Victoria Yards, Johannesburg — founded by two young engineers, Aaron and Gabriel, whose journey from chemistry to craft shaped everything the brand would become. Backed by Nando's co-founder Robert Brozen, they came to me with a logo and a founders' story. Everything else needed to be built. I worked alongside Fine group global marketing agency to bring this to life.
-
Primal was entering a crowded premium spirits market competing against both established local craft brands and internationally recognised names. The challenge was to create a brand world distinctive enough to hold its own ; one that felt premium without feeling distant, urban without feeling generic, and authentically South African without leaning on tired heritage clichés.
-
Engaged as brand consultant and working alongside Fine Group Global Marketing Agency, I developed the full brand strategy and identity system from the ground up. Starting only from their existing logo and founders' story, I was responsible for:
Defining the brand's positioning, purpose, and personality
Writing the full brand narrative, manifesto, and tone of voice guidelines
Developing the "Primal Moment" concept as the brand's emotional core
Building out target audience personas and competitive positioning
Creating the complete visual identity guidelines: colour palette, typography, imagery direction, and moodboard
Designing all brand collateral and the final brand guide document
-
A comprehensive brand strategy and identity system that gave Primal a clear, confident voice in the premium craft spirits market. The brand is now positioned around a single compelling idea — the city distilled — with a full visual and verbal identity system ready to scale across packaging, events, and digital.
